The name

What does "Coast Clock" mean?

Coast Clock is the name of this free tool. "Coast" means reaching a point where you can ease off and let your savings keep growing on their own. "Clock" is the countdown: the calculator shows the age, and roughly the month and year, when you get there. Put together, the Coast Clock Calculator tells you when you can start coasting. Learn how your coast number works.

The idea

What does "Coast FIRE" mean?

FIRE stands for "Financial Independence, Retire Early." Coast FIRE is one version of it. You've reached Coast FIRE when the money you've already saved is enough that, even if you never add another dollar, normal investment growth will carry it to what you need by retirement age. You still work to pay your everyday bills, but you no longer have to save for retirement. That gives you room to take a lower-stress job, work part-time, or spend more today. Questions

FAQ

Is the Coast Clock Calculator free?

Yes. There's no sign-up, and the math runs in your browser. Your numbers aren't sent to us.

Do I need to know about investing to use it?

No. Enter a few everyday numbers, like your age, take-home pay, spending and savings. The defaults handle the rest, and you can adjust them later.

What's the difference between Coast FIRE and regular FIRE?

Regular FIRE means saving enough to stop working completely. Coast FIRE means saving enough that you can stop saving for retirement, while still working to cover today's bills.

What return should I use?

The calculator asks for your expected yearly return before inflation (it starts at 7%) and adjusts for inflation for you. Nothing is guaranteed, so try a lower number to see a more cautious result.

Does this count Social Security or a pension?

Not yet. Income and spending describe your cash flow today, and we use the difference to estimate how much you save each month. If you lowered your spending to account for Social Security or a pension, it would also look like you save more today, so the benefit would be counted twice. For now we assume your investments cover all of your retirement spending, which is a cautious estimate if you expect other retirement income.

Do you store or send my data?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser, and we don't add analytics or tracking. If you tap "Save my countdown clock," your inputs are saved only in this browser's local storage. Our host, a global content delivery network (CDN), handles the basic requests your browser makes to load each page, and product links take you to Amazon, which has its own privacy policy. Our About page has the full privacy note.

Is this financial advice?

No. It's an estimate to help you plan. For decisions about your own money, talk to a licensed financial professional.

Why is it called the Coast Clock Calculator and not a Coast FIRE calculator?

Coast Clock is our name for the tool, and Coast FIRE is the idea behind it. The Coast Clock Calculator works out your Coast FIRE date.
